This is an awareness raising workshop which builds on the work of the Learning Disability Pilot Study which Tyneside Rape Crisis Centre completed in 2003: "Learning Disability and Sexual Abuse, The Use of a Woman only Counselling Service by Women with a Learning Disability".
The Project won the Community Care Award in 2004 in the Learning Disability category. This workshop will benefit those working with adult survivors of sexual violence who have a learning disability.
Over time many workers have told us they feel they need extra qualifications and skills to work with clients who have a learning disability. In order to address this, and from our experiences of working directly with this client group, TRCC has developed this workshop.
Objectives
Develop some knowledge and an understanding of clients who have a learning disability and have experienced sexual violence
Explore society’s views in relation to people with learning disabilities
Build confidence and develop skills
Explore the effects of sexual violence on a person with a learning disability
Identify ways of supporting people when disclosures are made
Participants will receive a Resource Pack and Certificate of Attendance
